A new study published last week suggests that working out may keep people looking younger longer.
Researchers at McMaster University in Ontario conducted experiments on two groups of mice, both possessing a genetic mutation that causes them to age faster. One group was allowed to exercise by running in their wheels, the other was not.
At eight months old, the inactive mice were frail, balding, and some had died. The runners on the other hand still had full coats of fur, had maintained their muscle mass and brain volume, and their hearts and man parts (which usually shrink) were still full size.
After a year, none of the runners had died of natural causes, while all of the sedentary mice had.
While the researchers say they can't be sure exactly how exercise alters the course of aging and to what extent, they say it is clear that it plays a part.
